Museum Display Looks at Whiting's Baseball Connection

From its earliest days, Whiting was a baseball town. The Whiting Grays were an almost unbeatable team that took on the best from Chicago and other communities in the late 1890s. Since that time, the city has produced major league stars like Johnny Mostil, Al Pilarcik, and Steve Kraly, and has won championships on the state level and in Midwest tournaments. All of this rich baseball history will be on display in a new exhibit at the Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society Museum.

The exhibit opens on Sunday, October 17, from noon to 4 P.M. at the museum, located at 1506 119th Street in downtown Whiting. Admission is free.

Also on display will be a tribute to the Chicago White Sox, in honor of their post-season run in 2021, with a look back at their previous World Series appearances.

The exhibit will be open from noon to 4 P.M. every Sunday from October 17 through December 5,with the exception of October 31 (Halloween).

Also on display at the museum will be an exhibit of items about Dr. Robert Humphreys. Dr. Humphreys was a Standard Oil chemist who lived in Whiting and helped to revolutionize the oil industry. .
