The Whiting/Robertsdale Historical Society held their monthly meeting at the Mascot Hall of Fame Museum on Thursday, November 15, 2018. The meeting was called to order by President Priscilla McCarty-Reed at 12 noon. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the regular business session.
The members in attendance were asked to vote by secret ballot if the start of our meetings should be moved to 1 pm from our usual 12 noon time. By a great majority the members voted to keep the time at 12 noon.
The guest speaker was Mr. Kevin Clutter from the Hammond Historical Society. His topic was the history of the House of David. Kevin spoke of the origins of this group and their settlement of the area in and around Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Some of our historical society members remembered visiting the House of David amusement park, theater & zoo and even riding on the miniature steam locomotives built by the House of David members.
Kevin brought with him many pictures, post cards as well as a poster advertising the baseball and basketball teams that barnstormed the country during the 1920’s and 1930’s. His presentation was very interesting and informative.
The meeting concluded with the “Split the Pot” and refreshments provided by volunteers. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 24.
