Whiting’s Got Your Number

Prior to 1931 residences and businesses throughout the City of Whiting had a different address than we see today. At that time all of the structures in the city had a three digit address instead of the four digits that we use now. In addition, in many cases the even and odd numbers were switched. So, if today you have and odd numbered address there was a good chance that your original home was even numbered. Through my research I utilized the Sanborn maps, the Lake County Assessor’s Office Property Search, and Google maps. I did discover some interesting facts about Whiting in my research. There are 190 properties that were built in the 1890s. Forty-eight of those buildings were constructed in 1890, the oldest recorded date of any structure in the city. There is one residence on 121st, Fred, Indianapolis Blvd., and Schrage Avenue. There are four buildings from 1890 on Fischrupp and thirty-six on Ohio Avenue. Homes on Ohio Avenue were known as “The Village” and the were inhabitated by Standard Oil’s foremans and managers.
